1. What significant incidents could occur within your community? If you have been part of one, did you use NIMS, and what are your thoughts on how it went? What position(s) did you have within the structure? Imagine yourself in one of the roles discussed in the lesson, and reflect on what your actions would be if a significant incident occurred in your area.
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.
2. When you consider the company you currently work for, or a former employer, what are your thoughts around protecting that employer from risk as it pertains to workers’ compensation and general liability matters? Some employers are at risk because they chose to take a calculated risk with certain cut-rate insurance coverages, some companies do not know they are at risk. Still others believe they are “too big to fail;” in other words, they do not think the penalty is enough to worry about. What actions would you take? Would you look to educate your company leadership, or would you simply do nothing if you noticed that the company was at risk in these areas? Why, or why not?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.
3. Take a few moments and reflect on the big picture of the workers’ compensation and general liability insurance costs to a large company. Hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars of premium payments depend on the results of the workers’ compensation audit. A rise of 0.25 in the rate could cost millions of dollars, or a drop of 0.25 in the rate could save millions of dollars. With these dollar figures in mind, reflect on the goals you would set for the safety and health manager or team of the company. What priority would you set up their goals? Would it depend on how much gross profit is made by the company? What factors would you weigh?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.
4. Many times the workers’ compensation coordinator is somewhere far away in another state, at the corporate office, or may even be a contracted service. Therefore, the EH&S Manager is the most knowledgeable individual in the plant.
With these variables in mind, develop a PowerPoint for important aspects of workers’ compensation that front line supervisors’ need to understand. The assignment is flexible so that you may choose what you feel is most important to the supervisors of the company, but the following questions should be answered:
What are the key points every supervisor should know about the company’s workers’ compensation program or laws?
What are some of the different types of coverage available?
What are the record-keeping systems and reporting requirements?
Your PowerPoint must be a minimum of eight slides. Ensure the PowerPoint presentation has a title slide, an outline of topics to be discussed, and a reference slide at the end of the presentation. These slides do not count toward the eight-slide minimum. You must use a minimum of two resources in your presentation. All information from the resources used should be cited in accordance with APA Style guidelines.
