Research paper

For this assignment, compose an essay of 1,200-1,500 words based on a topic stemming from your brainstorming, marginalia, or SCW essays over the last couple weeks. You may expand one of the SCW essays or dive into a brand new topic. Remember that this paper must be a formal persuasive essay arguing for a clear position on your topic; in addition, it must be supported by research. Be sure to include quotes and/or paraphrases from an adequate number of credible, academic sources.

Whereas in all other class writing only a basic level of professional standard is expected, the research paper requires high academic standards; choices about diction and syntax should be made with care, grammatical and mechanical conventions should be carefully followed, and appropriate tone and POV should be maintained.

It is fine for your essay to deviate from the direction described in the Proposal & Outline assignment; just make sure that the paper’s focus is consistent throughout itself. While preparing the essay, be sure to refer to the course lecture materials as needed, and remember that writing is a process–you should expect to write multiple drafts in order to create a successful paper.

Introduction

In this research paper I chose to look at “The Problem of Consciousness” by Eric Kandel. I will examine how it correlates with Nature vs. Nurture. In this research articles like the 2009 Article “Lighter Sentence for Murder with ‘Bad Genes’, by E. Feresin will be examined. The comparison will be made of two individuals that grew up in the same home with the same biological parents, attended the same schools, that they grew into people with completely opposite life outcomes as adults. The only physical difference is age and gender, now as adults one in a drug addict in and out of different rehab facilities and one is in their senior year of college with no addictions and a promising future so what went wrong and what are the biological and environmental factors that may have caused these differences. This research will examine what went wrong and explore the biological and environmental factors that may have caused this outcome.

Thesis Statement

This research will examine what went wrong and explore the biological and environmental factors that may have caused this outcome. In this essay a discussion of behaviors as a product of either inherited or acquired characteristics will be shared. Does Nature outweigh Nurture? And are we solely influenced by our genetic make-up?

II. Body

1.) Biology the genetic make up of a person can cause biological problems in life regardless of health.

a.)Heredity and variations are controlled by genes

b.)Physical elements can be predetermined by your family

2.)Behaviorism suggest that all behaviors are determined by environmental factors.

a.)Response to stimuli

b.) Ability to learn new behavior

3.)Psychoanalytic Psychology is the study of theories and therapeutic techniques related to the study of the unconscious mind.

a.)Psychoanalysis founded by Sigmund Freud

b.)Nature plays a significant role or can be completely responsible for someones behavior.

III. Conclusion

Nature over Nurture can be considered a suitable argument for many medical issues and criminal actions. It is important to note that there are correlations between genes and free will. Things that are inherited, or given to us genetically are not beyond our control. Some genetic medical illnesses can still be prevented if lifestyles are adjusted and bad behavior is not repeated.

Summary:

The relationship a child has with his parent will have a significant effect on his social, emotional

and psychological development. The ability to understand the dynamics of the parent-child

relationship is of great importance. Many factors affect the role of a parent including education,

age and their own childhood experiences. There is belief by some parents, that they have little

responsibility for and that personality of their child is not at all similar to their own. There is

however, significant research showing temperament is affected more often than not by genetics.

While the genetic make-up and personality of siblings is similar, the parental perception cannot

be ignored. The nature of the child is their genetic make-up while the parent’s interaction and

perception of the child contributes to their specific behaviors and overall personality which is a part of their nurture.

Response:

Behaviorism suggests that all behaviors are determined by environmental factors. In fact, internal forces play absolutely no role in the behaviors of human beings. Evidence supported in the text from genetic research shows that temperament and behavior is genetically influenced by internal forces. The evidence given both in this text and personal experience shapes my belief that genetics play a vital role in our behavior and personality. I would caution however that a negative personality trait does not make “absolutes” in any behaviors. Along with our conscious mind, we have free will and the environment we grow and develop socially in also contributes to the behavior we choose

Summary:

There was thought that certain conditions could be the cause of criminal behavior in people as a

result of genetics but this is no longer the belief of modern research. The idea was that an

individual could have genetically inherite a gene that made them predisposed to act out or

commit criminal acts. Findings like these have made behavioral genetics a controversial issue

even though genetics have been related to other medical conditions. Although the genetic

research on this issue is incomplete, there has been instances where this belief may have caused

longer prison sentences. It has also been responsible for a convicted murderer in Italian court to

receive a reduction of one year off a prison term because it was proven that he had a gene called

MAOA. This gene is believed to cause many disorders including hyper-sexuality to sleep

disorders. MAOA is shown to occur in about 40% of the population. It can be argued that if this

gene effects so many people in the population how can so many others can lead productive non-

criminal lives? In addition, they have done so even while they experienced the known trigger of

mistreatment during childhood. A condition that is considered when talking about behavioral genetics is psychopathy. Psychopathy is in the spectrum of nature and nurture; you do not have the ability to feel empathy which is genetic and sociopathy that can be effected by your environment. Even with this diagnosis, a gene does not take the responsibility for someone committing a crime.

Response:

Within the world of Biology, it is widely known that physical characteristics as well was ones vulnerability to certain illnesses are due to a person’s genetic makeup. Understanding how genetics works and not knowing how its function contributes to physical attributes as well as biological ailments, the question of whether this same functioning applies when it comes to psychological characteristics remains a great debate within psychology. I was surprised to discover a gene that was proven based upon research to cause impulsive behavior, hyper sexuality and mood swings. The fact that nearly half the population lives with this gene yet live without being hostile or criminal proves to me even more that the nature of our conscious mind does not have to overcome the good people we were nurtured to be.

Feresin E. (2009) Lighter Sentence for Murder with ‘Bad Genes’.

Nature doi:10.1038/news.2009.1050

Summary:

Brunner Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder associated with a mutation in the MAOA

gene. It is characterized a problematic impulsive behavior (such as hyper-sexuality and violence), sleep disorders and mood swings. It was identified in fourteen males from one family in 1993. It has since been discovered in two additional families. In 2009, an Italian Appeal court granted a reduced sentence to a convicted murderer (Abdelmalek Bayout), on grounds that he had a version of the MAOA gene. Bayout killed a man because he confronted him about the religious make up he was wearing. Bayout stabbed and killed Walter Felipe Novoa Perez. Although to some this may seem extremely ridiculous, there are growing studies showing that low-expression variant of MAOA, known as MAOA-L has been linked in various studies with increased risk of violent and aggressive behavior.

Response:

This is a clear example of how genes can influence one’s behavior; however, it is not stated on what this particular man’s background and rearing consisted of. Are all individuals diagnosed with Brunner syndrome prone to violent behavior and hyper-sexuality? I also agree with the fact that if prosecutors want to use this gene to get their clients a shorter sentence because the clients violence was due to there genetics. We can use it against the alleged criminal by proving if this individual is released he may commit a violent crime again. If he can’t control himself, he is put into a stressful situation he could kill again and there for should not be out on the street with many unsuspecting triggers.
